The Benefits of Faxing with a Voice-Over IP Connection
Over the past few years there has been an increasing level of hype over the terms VOIP and FOIP. However, how many of us truly understand what these acronyms mean and if they have any relevance to our business operations?
If we take a close look at Voice-Over IP (VOIP); there has been a rise in the amount of evaluation and acceptance of organizations resulting in implementations of a Voice-Over IP platform. These implementations have assisted in the empowerment of internal workers to communicate to both internal and external contacts, without relying on a traditional phone line connection. Local and Wide Area Network infrastructure, the same connections that were traditionally used for data transfer, now support a voice frequency with a high degree of quality, redundancy and cost savings. The return on investment for Voice-Over IP technology has been well documented and established as a cost-effective method of voice communication for organizations of any size.
How does this technology apply to fax?
In the advent of Fax-Over IP (FOIP) the same transmission platforms that are used for voice can also used for fax.
Why not just connect my existing fax server to my Voice-Over IP network and allow faxing through my VOIP infrastructure?
Many of the protocols used for traditional hardwired voice connections are significantly different than those used in an IP voice environment. These communication platforms require specialized fax devices that are capable of sending transmissions over a Voice-Over IP network. During the development of these technologies, the capability and processing power of personal computers increased dramatically. These achievements resulted in providing a standard PC, with the assistance of software, the ability to leverage its own resources to accomplish the same tasks that previously required a proprietary piece of hardware to accomplish.
What is the true benefit of a Fax-Over IP platform?
The true benefit is that no proprietary fax hardware is required. There is no reliance on a traditional fax board residing on a server, as the entire transmission can be completed with a software-based utility that is capable of handling, not only traditional hardwired fax connections, but IP based fax connections as well.
